Bijou Bistro, Rathgar

January is a tough month isnโ€™t it?! Everyone is flat broke after Christmas, waiting and waiting for payday. Most of us have over indulged throughout December too and are trying hard to eat well and get some exercise in! The one thing that brightens it up for me is my birthday arriving half way through the dull, miserable month ๐Ÿ™‚ ๏Š

I tend to have a night with the girls in town then a quieter meal with my Mam โ€ฆ. Whatโ€™s a birthday without a few celebratory meals thrown in?! This year I had a lovely meal in 37 Dawson Street with the girls then decided on Bijou in Rathgar for a local meal with the mother. Weโ€™d visited the restaurant a good few years back but since then the local eatery has gone from strength to strength.

We visited on a Sunday evening for the Early Bird. While it was pretty quiet when we arrived it picked up gradually as the evening went on and by the time we left there was a nice buzz about the place. We were seated at the window, perfect for a bit of people watching.

We started by ordering a nice bottle of New Zealand Marlborough, โ‚ฌ33. E was designated driver so stuck to the soft drinks! The Early Bird offered 2 courses for โ‚ฌ20, with a couple of supplements for the likes of the steak and the cheese board.

Feeling hungry, myself and Mam decided to get the cheeseboard as a shared starter instead of dessert, with a supplement of โ‚ฌ5. What arrived was a lovely board with very generous portions of a good mix of cheese and a massive pile of crackers coated with a sweet glaze and sesame seeds. We dug straight in and probably ate far more than a starter should but it was too good not to!

E went with the White Onion soup which was served a truffle salsa and some brown bread. I had a quick tryโ€ฆ. A lot more tasty than I expected!

For mains E stuck to his old reliable of the steak, a Rib Eye served with Bรฉarnaise sauce and skinny fries, with a supplement of โ‚ฌ7. While he doesnโ€™t eat Bearnaise sauce he made short work of the steak and chips and was impressed.

Mam got the Featherblade of beef with shallot. Iโ€™ve eaten this on one previous occasion and absolutely loved it. It didnโ€™t disappoint here either, slow cooked and falling apart, the meat was beautiful.

I went for the Pan Fried Salmon which came with crushed baby potatoes. Portion size was HUGE, a good pile of potatoes and a sizable chunk of fish that was perfectly cooked. Even having eaten half a cheese board I managed to finish most of my dish.

After that substantial feed, we took a bit of a break and ordered a few more drinks while deciding if we should go for dessert. In the end we went for the Apple Crumble with Crรจme Anglaise and Ice Cream. It was served in a lovely glass dish and after heating it up, it was a sweet comforting dessert to finish off our meal.

Final bill came to โ‚ฌ129.80, that included 3 early birds (2 supplements), 3 soft drinks, a bottle of wine plus 2 additional glasses. The food we were given was absolutely faultless and I enjoyed every bit of it. Itโ€™s great to have fabulous little restaurants like this in the suburbs and not have to head into town whenever you want a good mealโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll certainly be back!

  1. Love this restaurant. Its standards had slipped a bit but it’s great to see it back to its best. We had a lovely meal there on New Year’s Eve. It also has the best smoking area of any restaurant in Dublin!

    • I didn’t even see the smoking area! Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere the night I was there….. delighted to see it being spoken about so highly by most people who visit too!
