Christmas Afternoon Tea at The Westbury

Please don’t be angry at me!!! Halloween is tomorrow so we are all officially allowed to talk about Christmas now 🙂

Winter just isn’t my season, I abhore the cold, hate the rain and do not like the dark days. I do however get caught up in the Christmas buzz and love it, up until Christmas day which I find pretty boring and a bit of a come down after the build up of the weeks before. My favourite part of Christmas is the buzz about the place and my favourite day over the period is without doubt Christmas Eve. I spend the few days of Christmas with my Mam… eating her food, drinking her wine and being nice and cosy in her house 🙂 While we don’t have too many traditions, the one we do have is one I thoroughly enjoy – Christmas Eve Afternoon Tea at The Westbury Hotel on Grafton Street.

I’ve saved this post up from last year as there was little point telling you all about it after Christmas last year – it would be well forgotten! We have been going to The Westbury every Christmas Eve for years now and each year we enjoy it more. The hotel is luxurious on any occasion but they go all out for the festive period and the feeling is one of magic and anticipation. After a few hours of braving the madness of Grafton Street it’s utterly relaxing to go indoors and enjoy a glass of wine in the comfort of their Gallery Lounge or in the Marble Bar.

Last year we were lucky enough to get a fantastic table at the window overlooking Balfe Street. We chose the champagne option (why not!) and were presented with two glasses of beautiful pink fizz. Mam ordered some tea and I chose the Nutella hot chocolate – cannot express how good this was!

First to come out was a generous plate of sandwiches. There was a good selection and they definitely satisfied our savoury hunger before all the treats arrived!

Now onto the main event! Our stand of warm scones and mince pies arrived with a selection of jam and cream on the bottom layer and all the other sweet goodies were presented in a hatbox – what amazing presentation! The inside had been filled with a layer of white material at the top to depict a snowy scene with a cute little meringue snowman in the centre.

I’ve had quite a few Afternoon Teas before in Dublin’s hotels (2 that I blogged are The Dylan Hotel & The Morrison Hotel) and none of them come close to the standard here. There wasn’t a single element that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy, every bite was delicious.

The staff are always fantastic here, super friendly and efficient. It all adds up to make the Afternoon Tea much more than just dining, it’s a whole experience. Paired with the Santa who does the rounds doling out presents to the delighted kids and the little bag of mince pies to take home and enjoy it really is my favourite thing about the run up to Christmas!

We have booked in again for this Christmas Eve but unfortunately they are almost booked out so we got a very early slot. If you are interested I would get in touch with The Westbury ASAP and book yourself in for a lovely treat 🙂

  1. Hey Kate – it sounds amazing and I looked it up thee to book for my Mam and aunty but it is €45 each – very expensive. Am still thinking I might do it – is it really worth it? The Westin is €26 and Gresham just €21 but not sure they will be as opulent as The Westbury. Am not sure what to do…
