Afternoon Tea at Powerscourt Hotel

I’m all about the treats these days … isn’t life too short not to treat yourself!? πŸ™‚ Last weekend I possibly treated myself a little (lot!) more than normal – a fabulous meal in Angelina’s on Saturday, which I’ll review soon, and then a little overnighter in the Powerscourt Hotel in Wicklow on Sunday. I mean we all need some R & R right?!

I’ve stayed at the hotel before (review here) and LOVE it… it’s just so completely relaxing and the setting amongst the trees and mountains just makes it completely peaceful. Seeing as I had a little bit of a sore head from the previous night, it was exactly what the doctor ordered!

We arrived just around lunchtime and checked in then went straight down for our Afternoon Tea reservation. Served in the Sugar Loaf Lounge, it’s the idea spot for some cake eating.

We started the experience with a glass of champagne – of course!

I was delighted that there was a whole separate menu for the veggie option, so there was a plate each of the savoury choices and then the top layer of scones, a fruit and a plain one each.

The vegetarian choices were Roasted pimento pepper with baba ganoush and goats cheese on soda bread, baby ratatouille with hummous and olives en croute, tomato and mozzarella with basil on toasted mini brioche and lastly a sandwich finger with vintage cheddar, pickles and carrot and ginger relish.

For the standard plate there was a smoked salmon with lemon and dill cream cheese on soda bread, rosemary ham with dijon filling en croute, a coronation chicken finger sandwich and lastly an egg and chive mayonnaise on toasted mini brioche.

Sometimes the veggie choices can be a tad bland, but I was more than pleased with the offering here!

Next up were the scones, still lovely and warm and served with Kilmacanogue strawberry jam, lemon curd and cream… they were light and fresh – perfection!

Somewhat different to any other Afternoon Tea that I’ve had before, the last selection of sweet goodies was actually served from a dessert trolley, with a choice of 2 each. I honestly can’t remember each of the options they presented but we both went for the amazingly zingy and light lemon cheesecake, along with a carrot cake and another cheesecake in the form of the Bavarian cream cheesecake.

I have to admit the Bavarian cream wasn’t my favourite but that was just a personal preference and everything else was absolutely delicious.

Afternoon Tea without the bubbles is €39 per person and with the champagne is €52 per person – pricey I admit, but for the quality and the setting it’s worth pushing the boat out for a treat!
