I am now very familiar with adding a new food spot onto my “To Try” list…. however, some newer openings may sit on that list for quite a while before I get around to visiting, while others I make it a priority to try out as soon as I possibly can! I’ve had many a great meal in Ananda in Dundrum so when I heard that their chef Sunil Ghai was setting up shop on Camden Street along with his business partner Benny Jacob, I was genuinely excited to see what they came up with and put Pickle straight at the top of my ever expanding list.
Décor is pared back but comfortable and the walls adorned with bright colourful posters lend a casual and fun element to the dining area.
Pitched as “a modern Indian Restaurant specialising in North Indian Regional Cuisine” I knew this wouldn’t be your standard Madras or Jalfrezi menu. And far from a standard Indian menu is offered at Pickle with choices like Irish sea lobster poached in turmeric & ginger curry, Goat mince curry with shallots & Guinea fowl masala on the main course menu.
To start with we chose the Samosa with ginger, raw mango & jaggery chutney, sour yoghurt black cumin and Crispy potato cakes filled with asafoetida, raw mango infused lentils & trio of chutneys. Presentation was spot on and the flavours in the potato cake were exceptional!
Mains of Cottage cheese cooked with kadhai masala & Traditional lamb & bone marrow curry with onion, ground ginger and Kashmiri chilly were presented in beautiful shiny silver bowls along with rice and naan. While many may pass vegetarian options off as not satisfying them, this was a fiery and extremely tasty curry and I defy anyone to try it and not be impressed!
Total bill along with 3 glasses of wine was a reasonable €90. I am so pleased to see something unique in an Indian restaurant and know that Pickle will be a favourite among many!
