The struggle is real … my next break away isn’t until October when I go to Croatia for a week. I can’t complain to be fair as I’ve had a couple of city breaks this year in Rome and Paris, but it is still a little hard at this time of year when everyone is jetting off to lay on the beach in the sun!
To break up the wait for my own holidays I’ve booked a couple of nights away in Ireland. My last one was a few weeks ago when myself and a friend went to Wineport Lodge for the night. We grabbed a Luxury Breaks deal for €225 which included breakfast and a 3 course meal… the fact that Athlone isn’t too far to drive made it the perfect location, along with the good reports I’d heard about the food there and the name it built up for itself when it hosted the tv series The Restaurant.
The hotel is on the shores of Lough Ree and is really the type of place you go to stay in knowing that you’ll not venture far at all. There are bikes that can be booked to go off for a cycle or a few local walks to do …..or you can do like we did and just totally chill out 🙂
We paid an extra €40 to upgrade to a suite and I was delighted we did. We got the Margeaux suite which was light and spacious and also had a lovely balcony with great perspective out to the lake.
We started off with some lunch in the bar… this is the only area of the hotel that I wasn’t crazy about. It was nice enough but just slightly outdated interior wise.
The scones were delicious!
We then took our glasses of wine and went to sit down near the shore for a while ….
One thing to note is that there is no spa or pool at the hotel which is pretty unusual these days. They do however have 2 heated hot tubs on a deck so with the weather behaving itself we went up and passed an hour relaxing there. There are treatment rooms where you can book in for a massage etc but we didn’t avail of them this visit.
The hotel is not ultimate luxury. What it is though is cosy, comfortable and relaxing. The staff were so helpful and the atmosphere through the hotel is of everyone being very chilled out and making the experience as nice as it could possibly be.
In the evening the lights and the water make it a really beautiful place to be….
We found a little corner to have a glass of wine before dinner then went through to the restaurant, anticipating some good food!
Superfood Salad – quinoa, avocado, broccoli, pomegranate, sunflower and pumpkin seeds
Fish & Chips ( chips not pictured!)
Sweet Potato and Mozzarella Arancini
Of course we managed dessert too 🙂
I have to say that the food was absolutely fabulous that evening.. not one single complaint about it. Portions were large, and I know sometimes on these deals you can find the choice is limited or the portion size suffers but we literally rolled out of the restaurant with full and happy tummies!
The next morning breakfast was served in the same restaurant. Although a dull day it was still lovely to nab a window seat and sit looking out to the lake over your breakfast. There was the usual buffet fare and then the hot food was made to order.
My experience in Wineport was great and exactly what I needed. It’s a very unpretentious place with no airs and graces and is the ideal place to go to completely relax. The food was fantastic and while it may not be the fanciest hotel in Ireland it is still one I’d return to.
